Reliable collection of meteorological data becomes particularly challenging when the installation is located in a remote area, without access to the electrical grid, Wi-Fi or a fixed Internet connection.
For exactly these types of applications, Rousis Systems has designed and manufactured a complete autonomous weather monitoring and IoT telemetry system, capable of continuous operation under demanding environmental conditions while transmitting real-time measurements via the mobile network.
Two representative installations of the system are currently operating at particularly demanding locations in the Thermaic Gulf: Angelochori Lighthouse and Potamos Epanomi, Thessaloniki.
Where There Is No Power, Wi-Fi or Fixed Internet Connection
This application was designed with complete autonomy as a fundamental requirement. The stations are installed in locations where the infrastructure normally required by a conventional weather station is unavailable. Their operation does not depend on local Wi-Fi or a wired Internet connection, while their energy autonomy allows installation even in isolated coastal areas. The system combines:
- autonomous power supply,
- integrated battery and photovoltaic charging,
- communication via the mobile network,
- Rousis Systems-designed IoT controller,
- professional and certified sensors,
- automatic data transmission to a remote server,
- real-time presentation of measurements through a web application.
As a result, a station can be installed on a coastline, lighthouse, marina, port or any other remote location and operate 24 hours a day without the need for local human intervention.
Real-Time Meteorological Measurements
The installations record and transmit important environmental parameters such as temperature and atmospheric pressure, with the possibility of expanding the system with additional sensors. The data is automatically transmitted to the server, where it can be used by websites, applications or other information systems. Users can therefore view the actual conditions at the specific measurement location, rather than relying solely on a general weather forecast covering a wider geographical area.
Designed for Marine Environments
One of the greatest technical challenges of this project is the installation environment itself. The equipment is permanently exposed to humidity, salt, intense solar radiation, strong winds and significant temperature variations. For this reason, the electronic system, power management and telemetry have all been designed with long-term, reliable outdoor operation in mind.
Hardware, Firmware and IoT by Rousis Systems
The most important aspect of this project is that it is not simply an integration of a ready-made commercial weather station. Rousis Systems develops the electronic control system, firmware, communications and data management, creating a complete platform that can be adapted to the specific requirements of each installation.
This approach enables the development of specialised applications for ports and marinas, sports facilities and watersports, municipalities and public organisations, industrial facilities, agriculture, environmental monitoring, remote infrastructure and research applications.
From the Sensor to the User's Screen
The information follows a complete digital path: Sensors → Rousis IoT Controller → Mobile Network → Server → Database → Web Application → Live Weather Data.
The result is a true end-to-end IoT monitoring system, designed for applications where reliability and autonomy are more important than simply installing a conventional weather station.
Greek Expertise – European Manufacturing
The installations at Angelochori Lighthouse and Potamos Epanomi are representative examples of the Rousis Systems philosophy: developing specialised electronic and IoT systems for applications where standard off-the-shelf solutions are not sufficient.
From hardware and firmware to telemetry and data presentation, the system can be customised to meet the actual requirements of each project.
